What Causes Facial Nerve Pain?

Some common causes include:

  • Trigeminal neuralgia: This is often the main cause, as overactive signals in the trigeminal nerve trigger sudden and severe facial pain.

  • Bell’s palsy: When the facial nerve gets inflamed, it can make one side of the face weak and sore.

  • Infections: Some viral illnesses, like shingles, can make nerves swell up, which can cause acute, burning pain in the face.

  • Trauma: Any injury to your facial bones can also damage nerves.

  • Dental or sinus issues: Pressure, infection, or inflammation in the teeth or sinuses can further irritate the facial nerves.

  • Chronic conditions: If you deal with EDS or multiple sclerosis, it can make nerves more sensitive and prone to pain.

What Causes Facial Nerve Pain?

Key Symptoms of Facial Nerve Pain

  • Sharp or burning sensations: When you start experiencing sudden, intense facial pain, often due to speaking, chewing, or light touch.

  • Tingling or numbness: Having a constant feeling of pins-and-needles affecting one side of the face, sometimes with weakness.

  • Muscle twitching or spasms: Involuntary contractions of facial muscles, which may worsen during stress or fatigue.

  • Pain in specific nerve areas: Like along the jaw, cheeks, or around the eyes and forehead.

  • Touch or temperature sensitivity:  Even a light touch, cold air, or brushing your teeth might make the pain worse.

  • Emotional distress: Chronic pain can cause anxiety, irritability, and affect your sleep.

How does Medical Cannabis Work on It?

Research published in the UK Medical Cannabis registry found improvements in pain severity, general health‑related quality of life (HRQoL) scores, and related outcomes in chronic pain patients prescribed CBMPs. Here’s how they work:

  • Reduces nerve inflammation: Cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system to calm your irritated facial nerves.

  • Modulates pain signals: With the help of medical cannabis, it can block or reduce pain signals travelling to the brain.

  • Relieves muscle tension: It helps to relax spasms or involuntary contractions, improving comfort and facial movement.

  • Customizable treatment: The facial nerve pain medical cannabis treatment in the UK is made according to your symptoms, ensuring safe dosing and ongoing medical support.

Alongside facial nerve pain care, we also manage cancer pain, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, medical cannabis treatment in the UK, and so much more. Take control of your facial nerve pain with clinically guided medical cannabis support from Leva today.

Data from proprietary sources, including collaboration with researchers from Imperial College and participation in research with Drug Science, indicate significant findings. BP (Pain Severity): 94% of patients reported an improvement in the severity of their pain. The percentage of chronic pain patients who reported any use of opioids decreased from 441 (55.1%) to 177 (22.1%), showing that over half (59.9%) of those previously using opioids had completely stopped. Additionally, more than 50% of patients with indications of major depression at initial assessment showed significant improvement after three months of treatment with medical cannabis and an online pain management program.
